All my life, I have had a relationship with faith and didn’t realize it at first. When I was a child, I had faith that Santa Claus would come Christmas morning even though I had never seen him. I had faith that the tooth fairy would leave money under my pillow for each tooth I lost. I just knew that having the light on at night would scare those monsters under my bed away. I had faith that there would be food on the table even though I did nothing to help purchase or prepare it. I had faith in my mother and grandmother that I would be taken care of without any proof necessary. Every day was a new day filled with hope and faith.
Of course, life took over and experiences tested my faith. Through abusive family members, poverty, war, and many other extreme situations, I had to question my faith as to what I believed in and who I believed in. I feel I must define what faith is so that we can understand why it is important to have it.
The Apostle Paul wrote in his epistle to the Hebrews
“Now Faith is the SUBSTANCE of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 (emphasis added).
I once saw a church billboard that said it like this:
“Faith is letting the Heart see what the Eye cannot”.
How awesome is that?!
If you will notice, I emphasized the word “substance” in the above scripture. I did this for a reason. A lot of people don’t understand that faith is really a TANGIBLE thing — it has SUBSTANCE.
What I am about to say next will sound a little “new aged” but bear with me until I am done.
There is a law out there that is just as real as the law of gravity — it is called the Law of Attraction. Whatever you think about or focus on, you will attract. Sounds “new aged”, doesn’t it? Well, I admit that there are a lot of interesting people using this law to their advantage. However, I want to investigate the spiritual aspect of this law so that you can see that it is a part of faith.
Look at this scenario first: You are driving down the road and you see a sign to your right that has lots of flashing lights and interesting messages. You are focusing on that sign intently. Now, did you veer off the road to the right?
Don’t lie, you know you did.
Why did you veer off to the right? Well, of course, because you were LOOKING at something on the right.
Let’s look at the story of Peter and how well he kept his eyes on the prize.
“And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. 29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. 31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt ?” Matthew 14: 28-31
How many times have we been told by preachers, teachers, ministers and evangelist to “Keep Our Eyes On Jesus!”. Why would we have to keep our eyes on Jesus in order to live with him again someday?
Simply, because what we FOCUS on is what we ATTRACT.
I don’t know about you, but I want to attract Jesus Christ to me so I am focusing on him and his teachings every day. There is nothing more important than securing our eternal place in the Kingdom of God. I believe this with my whole heart.
Now, this law of attraction is well and good for our eternal souls if we keep our focus on being more like Jesus Christ, but can this help us in our everyday lives as well?
Let’s delve a little deeper…..
How many of you get bills in the mail? How many of you like getting bills in the mail? How many of you start feeling bad when you see the bills pile up? When this starts to happen, what do you think about?
That’s right….you think about BILLS.
Guess what you are going to get more of….yes, you are right again, MORE BILLS!!!!
Why are you getting more bills? Because your FOCUS is on bills. The law of attraction states that whatever you focus on, you will attract.
Are you tired of getting bills you can’t pay?
Then stop thinking about them.
This is where the full power of FAITH kicks in.
- Do you have faith that Heavenly Father will help you pay those bills if you are diligent in trying to repay them? Your answer should be yes. If not, work on it until you can say yes.
- Do you need money to pay those bills? Again, more than likely.
What would happen if you set up a system to pay so much per month on bills and then FOCUSED on thanking God for sending you the money you need to pay them. Stop thinking of the debt, but focus on thanking God for all the checks you are receiving. You will actually want to visualize checks coming in the mail. I will discuss visualization in another chapter.
You are doing your part by setting up the system of repayment, willing to work at a job or business to earn the money to repay them while using the law of attraction and gratitude to ATTRACT the money you need to pay them instead of thinking about debt and feeling hopeless.
Whooh!!! That was a mouthful.
Can you begin to see the difference that taking Faith into Action can make? You are no longer a victim of debt but a person of faith who takes action and becomes proactive about their situation.
Did Noah sit on his rear end or did he ACT on faith and build the ark? There wasn’t any rain. He still went to work in preparation because he had faith that God told him to get ready.
Did Abraham sit on his rear end and not move when God told him to? Nope, he got up, gathered his family and went into new country completely on faith. He had no idea what was waiting for him, he just went.
FAITH = FOCUSED ACTION
Have you ever read that scripture where it talks about having the faith to move mountains?
21If ye have faith, and doubt not, …ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. 22And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. Matt 21:21
Have you ever wondered how that works? I have. This is what I have come up with.
What are the mountains in your life?
There are so many to choose from, isn’t there? Today we have such trials as debt, infidelity, pornography, anger, betrayal, slander, gossip, poor health, wayward spouse or children, poverty, war — the list could go on and on.
I don’t know about you, but it would be very hard for me to literally walk up to a mountain and say “Be Thou removed…“ and actually believe it is going to get up and go do what I say. Yet, I have faith that Christ wouldn’t lie to me and if he said I could do it, I supposed I could.
I think the real problem is that I don’t see a “NEED” for the mountain to go anywhere just yet so why try to move it?
That leads me to the mountains in our lives. Have you ever tried to quit an addiction such as over eating, smoking, drinking or drugs? Maybe gambling or pornography? Those are some pretty big mountains to move and most times we feel powerless to move them.
Could it be we don’t truly see a NEED to move them just yet? Are we more comfortable in our addiction and sin than if we were free? Is it too much work to get out of our comfort zone and develop the faith and necessity to remove these mountains? Maybe.
There lies an answer to the power of faith…
We must see the need so strongly that we can do nothing else but have the faith to remove the mountain.
We need to identify why it is better to remove the problem, what benefits it could and would give us, so that we can be empowered to develop our faith and gain hope.
We need to have a clear vision of what our lives would be like without those burdensome problems and focus on being free — focus on that vision of being free.
Start thanking our God for the power to be free from whatever problems we are facing right now. Finding new and better things to focus our attention on — maybe some things that get us out of our comfort zones.
This is having FAITH that God will deliver us from our problems.
It is not just sitting on our rear ends waiting for some miracle to happen without any effort on our part.
NO, it is saying to God, “I believe that if I get up and throw those cigarettes away right now because I can see myself having the breath to run and play with my children, I know you will help me fight the cravings. In fact, God, I am going to keep a pack of gum or sunflower seeds in my pocket for occasional cravings while I go out and help other people with their trials so that my mind will be too busy to think about smoking. I have faith that if I take action to help myself, you will give me HEAVENLY power to overcome this addiction and remove this mountain from my life. I have this faith in the name of Jesus Christ, AMEN”
Can you imagine….identifying every mountain in your life and doing this faith exercise with each of them? Do you think it would promote a change in your life? Would you feel energized to get off that couch and go for a walk? Would you feel empowered to clean up your computer viewing so that pornography isn’t accessible anymore?
When would NOW be a good time to start moving your mountains?
